This Winter of our Virulence

David Thorpe Poem Kubili

This winter of our virulence

On the canvas of our lives
to paint afresh augustness
I dip my brush in chivalry,
gone astray with indifference
in the clammy mists of time

On palette I mix pathos,
with vigour,
to reawaken empathy,
sleeping in shadows fallacious
on the caliginous side
of humanity

The bellicose background I erase,
discarding prejudice and scorn,
my brush spreads fragrancies
of spring, resuscitated
from this winter of our virulence
